Colored Window Tint: Blue, Chameleon & Custom Shades Explained

Colored window tint goes beyond standard black — blues, chameleon (color-shifting), and other custom shades add a distinctive look. Premium colored films (especially chameleon ceramic) still reject heat and block UV, but color and reflectivity choices have legal limits in Florida: front side windows must stay 28% VLT or lighter and non-reflective, so a mild colored tint works up front while bolder looks suit the rears. Here’s the full rundown.

What Is Colored Window Tint?

Most window tint is a neutral black or charcoal. Colored tint introduces a hue — the film carries a tint of color that shows in certain light. The most popular options:

Blue tint — A cool blue cast; one of the most requested colors
Chameleon / color-shift tint — Shifts color depending on viewing angle and light (purple-to-gold, blue-to-green, etc.); the boldest, most eye-catching option
Other shades — Yellow, red, bronze, and more for specific looks

Colored tint is about style and individuality rather than pure function — though premium versions still deliver real heat and UV performance.

Chameleon Tint: The Standout

Chameleon (also called color-shift or “flip”) tint is the most striking colored film. It uses multi-layer technology to reflect different colors depending on the angle and lighting, so the car’s glass appears to shift hues as you move around it.

The best chameleon films are ceramic-based, meaning they combine that head-turning color shift with:

Strong infrared heat rejection
Up to 99% UV blocking
No signal interference

That said, chameleon films tend to have some reflectivity by design — which matters for legality (more below), so they’re often best suited to rear glass where rules are looser.

Do Colored Tints Still Block Heat and UV?

It depends on the film. Premium colored ceramic films reject heat and block UV nearly as well as standard ceramic — you don’t have to sacrifice protection for style. Cheap colored dyed films, on the other hand, are mostly cosmetic and fade faster.

As always, the performance comes from the film material, not the color or darkness. If you want color and Florida heat protection, choose a quality ceramic-based colored film. See our ceramic vs. carbon vs. regular tint guide and types of window tint guide.

Is Colored Tint Legal in Florida?

This is the important part — colored and chameleon tints have two legal considerations in Florida:

1. Darkness (VLT)

Colored film still has to meet the same VLT limits: front side windows must be 28% VLT or lighter. A light colored tint can work up front; darker colored films belong on the rears (15% minimum for sedans; no limit for SUV/truck rears).

2. Reflectivity

This is where chameleon and metallic-colored films get tricky. Florida limits reflectivity to 25% on front side windows and 35% on rear side windows. Highly reflective or mirror-like color-shift films can exceed these limits — making them illegal up front. See our reflective tint legality guide for the details.

Bottom line: a mild, low-reflectivity colored tint can be legal on front windows, but bold chameleon/reflective looks are usually best kept to the rear glass. We measure both VLT and reflectivity to keep you compliant. For the full rules, see our Florida window tinting laws guide.

How Much Does Colored Tint Cost?

Colored and chameleon films are specialty products, so they cost more than standard black tint:

Colored dyed film: modest premium over standard, but lower performance
Colored/chameleon ceramic film: a significant premium — you’re paying for both the color technology and ceramic performance

A full chameleon ceramic job can run well above a standard tint. Pricing varies by film and coverage — see our window tinting cost guide and we’ll quote your specific look.

Is Colored Tint Right for You?

Choose colored tint if:

You want a distinctive, custom look beyond standard black
You love the color-shift effect of chameleon film (best on rears)
You want style plus protection (go ceramic-based)

Stick with standard black/charcoal if:

You want the darkest legal look and maximum simplicity
Budget is the priority
You want the most straightforward legal compliance up front

Frequently Asked Questions

Is colored window tint legal in Florida?

It can be, within limits. Colored film must meet the same VLT rules (front windows 28% or lighter) and reflectivity limits (25% front / 35% rear). Mild, low-reflectivity colors can be legal up front; bold or reflective chameleon looks are best on the rear glass.

What is chameleon tint?

Chameleon (color-shift) tint uses multi-layer film that appears to change color depending on the viewing angle and light. Premium versions are ceramic-based, combining the color effect with heat and UV rejection, but they often have some reflectivity that affects front-window legality.

Does colored tint block heat like regular tint?

Premium colored ceramic films block heat and UV nearly as well as standard ceramic. Cheap colored dyed films are mostly cosmetic. Performance comes from the film material, so choose ceramic-based colored film for real Florida heat protection.

Can I get blue tint on my car in Florida?

Yes, within the VLT and reflectivity limits. A light blue tint can work on front windows if it stays 28% VLT or lighter and non-reflective; darker blue shades suit the rear windows. We measure to keep you legal.

Is chameleon tint reflective?

Often, yes — the color-shift effect typically involves some reflectivity. That can exceed Florida’s front-window reflectivity limit, so chameleon film is frequently best applied to rear glass. See our reflective tint legality guide.

Does colored tint cost more?

Yes. Colored and especially chameleon films are specialty products that cost more than standard black tint, with ceramic-based color films carrying the biggest premium for combining color technology and performance.
