Florida Window Tinting Laws: What’s Legal in 2026?

Florida law (F.S. 316.2953) allows 28% VLT on front side windows, 15% VLT on rear side windows and the back windshield, and non-reflective tint above the AS-1 line on the windshield. We install legal tint every day at our Orlando, Tampa, and Clearwater shops — here’s exactly what you need to know.

Florida Window Tint Law Overview

Florida’s auto tinting laws are governed by Florida Statute 316.2953, which sets specific limits on how dark and how reflective your window tint can be. These rules apply to all vehicles registered in Florida, and they’re enforced during traffic stops and vehicle inspections.
The key measurement is VLT — Visible Light Transmission. VLT is expressed as a percentage: the higher the number, the more light passes through. A 70% VLT window lets in most light and appears nearly clear. A 5% VLT window (often called “limo tint”) blocks almost all light and looks almost black from the outside.
Florida sets different VLT limits depending on the window position and the vehicle type. Let’s break it down.

VLT Limits for Sedans and Coupes

Window PositionMinimum VLT AllowedWhat That Looks Like
WindshieldNon-reflective tint above AS-1 line onlyTop strip only
Front side windows28% VLTModerately dark
Rear side windows15% VLTDark
Rear windshield15% VLTDark

What 28% VLT Actually Looks Like

The 28% front-side limit is Florida’s most commonly cited number. It creates a noticeable tint that reduces glare and heat significantly while still allowing you to see inside the vehicle from the outside during daytime. At night, the interior is mostly obscured.
For most of our customers, 28% on the fronts paired with 15% on the rears creates a clean, graduated look with maximum legal privacy.

VLT Limits for SUVs, Trucks, and Vans

Here’s where it gets interesting. Florida law treats multi-purpose vehicles (SUVs, trucks, vans, and station wagons) differently from sedans:
Window PositionMinimum VLT Allowed
WindshieldNon-reflective tint above AS-1 line only
Front side windows28% VLT
Rear side windows
Any darkness (no limit)
Rear windshield
Any darkness (no limit)
That’s right — on SUVs, trucks, and vans, there is no VLT restriction on the rear side windows and rear windshield. You can go as dark as 5% (limo tint) on every window behind the driver without any legal issue.
This is one of the most common surprises for our customers. Many truck and SUV owners don’t realize they can go much darker on the back than sedan owners can. If you drive an SUV through Tampa or Orlando and want maximum privacy and heat rejection in the back, Florida law gives you the freedom to do that.

Windshield Tint Rules in Florida

Florida’s windshield tinting law is specific:
  • Above the AS-1 line: Non-reflective tint is allowed. The AS-1 line is typically 5–6 inches from the top of the windshield (marked on the glass itself).
  • Below the AS-1 line: No aftermarket tint is permitted that changes the windshield’s appearance.
However — and this is a point we discuss daily at our shops — clear ceramic windshield film is a gray area that’s increasingly common. Clear ceramic film doesn’t change the visual appearance of the windshield (it maintains 70%+ VLT) but blocks significant infrared heat and UV rays. Many Florida drivers and shops install it without issue, though technically any aftermarket film below the AS-1 line is not explicitly permitted by the statute.

Reflectivity Rules

Florida also limits how reflective (mirrored) your tint can be:
  • Front side windows: Must not be more than 25% reflective
  • Rear side windows: Must not be more than 35% reflective
Highly mirrored or chrome-style tint is illegal in Florida. Modern films from brands like LLumar are designed to stay well within these limits while still offering excellent heat rejection.

Medical Exemptions for Darker Tint

Florida provides a medical exemption for drivers who need darker tint due to medical conditions. Under F.S. 316.2953(3), you can get a medical exemption if you have a condition that requires reduced light exposure, such as:
  • Lupus
  • Photosensitivity disorders
  • Melanoma history
  • Albinism
  • Certain eye conditions

How to Get a Medical Exemption

  1. Obtain a signed statement from a licensed Florida physician specifying your medical condition and the need for darker window tint.
  2. Keep the medical exemption certificate in your vehicle at all times. If you’re stopped, you’ll need to present it.
  3. The exemption allows any darkness on the front side windows (below the standard 28% limit). Windshield rules remain the same.
  4. The exemption is specific to the patient, not the vehicle — it applies to whatever car you’re driving.
We install medical-exempt tint regularly at our shops. If you have the documentation, we’ll help you get the right film for your needs.

What Happens If You Get Pulled Over?

Florida treats illegal tint as a noncriminal traffic infraction. Here’s what to expect:
  • First offense: A “fix-it ticket” (formally a notice to correct). You typically have 30 days to remove or replace the tint. Once corrected, you present proof to the clerk of court and the fine is often waived or reduced.
  • Subsequent offenses: Fines of up to $116 per violation. Repeat offenders may face higher penalties.
  • Measurement: Officers use a tint meter pressed against the glass to measure VLT. The reading must be below the legal threshold for a citation.
In our experience, most tint-related stops happen when front side windows are noticeably darker than 28%. Rear windows rarely attract enforcement attention, especially on SUVs and trucks where any darkness is legal.
One note: just because a shop installed it doesn’t mean it’s legal. Some shops will install whatever darkness a customer asks for without discussing the law. We always inform our customers about Florida’s limits before installation and recommend legal levels.

Southeast States Comparison

If you drive across state lines — which many Central Florida residents do — it’s worth knowing how neighboring states compare:
StateFront Side WindowsRear Side WindowsRear Windshield
Florida
28% VLT15% VLT (sedan) / Any (SUV)15% VLT (sedan) / Any (SUV)
Georgia32% VLT32% VLT32% VLT
Alabama32% VLT32% VLT32% VLT
North Carolina35% VLT35% VLT35% VLT
South Carolina27% VLT27% VLT27% VLT
Florida is among the more permissive states in the Southeast for rear window darkness. However, if you frequently drive to Georgia or North Carolina, be aware that your legal 15% rear tint in Florida may technically be illegal in those states. Enforcement of out-of-state tint varies widely.

How We Help You Stay Legal at Tinterz

Every tint consultation at our Orlando, Tampa, and Clearwater shops starts with a discussion about Florida law. We:
  • Explain the legal limits for your specific vehicle type (sedan vs. SUV/truck rules)
  • Show you film samples at different VLT levels so you can see the actual appearance
  • Recommend the darkest legal option for maximum heat rejection and privacy within the law
  • Use only LLumar-branded films with documented VLT ratings that hold up to meter testing
  • Provide documentation of the film’s VLT rating with your installation
We don’t install illegal tint without informing you. If you request something beyond the legal limit and don’t have a medical exemption, we’ll let you know upfront so you can make an informed decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the darkest legal tint in Florida?

For sedans, the darkest legal tint is 28% VLT on front side windows and 15% VLT on rear side windows and the rear windshield. For SUVs, trucks, and vans, there is no rear-window limit — you can go as dark as 5% on everything behind the front doors.

Is 20% tint legal in Florida?

On front side windows, no — 20% is darker than the 28% legal limit. On rear side windows and the rear windshield of a sedan, yes — 20% is lighter than the 15% minimum. On SUVs and trucks, 20% is legal on all rear windows.

Can I tint my windshield in Florida?

Only above the AS-1 line with non-reflective tint. The full windshield cannot be tinted with a visible aftermarket film. Clear ceramic heat-rejection film is a separate consideration.

Do cops in Florida actually enforce tint laws?

Yes, though enforcement varies by county and officer. Front side windows that are visibly darker than 28% are the most common reason for tint-related stops. Rear windows are rarely scrutinized, especially on SUVs and trucks.

How much is a tint ticket in Florida?

First offense is typically a fix-it notice with no fine if corrected within 30 days. Subsequent offenses carry fines of up to $116. The real cost is the inconvenience of removing and replacing illegal tint.

Does factory tint count toward the VLT limit?

Yes. Factory tint (the slight darkening built into rear glass at the factory) already reduces VLT. When aftermarket film is added on top, the combined VLT is what matters legally. A 30% aftermarket film over a factory glass with 70% VLT produces an effective VLT of about 21%.
